Chanukah: The Significance of the name "Maccabee" - Exodus 15:11, by Dr. Terry Harman

Moses leading the Israelites through the Red Sea

Judas Maccabeus

The etymology of the term "Maccabee" reveals its significance concerning Chanukah and the Maccabean Revolt. The Maccabees were a group of Jewish leaders and warriors who, during the 2nd century BCE, rose against the Seleucid Empire to defend their religious freedom and heritage. The mission? Restore the Holy Temple. Led by Judas Maccabeus, the name has become synonymous with courage and unyielding faith.

Macabee the Hammer

The word "Maccabee" originates from the Hebrew word "Makabi," meaning "hammer." This epithet was rightly bestowed upon Judas Maccabeus, symbolizing his role as a powerful leader against the Hellenistic oppressors. The imagery of the hammer captures the Maccabees' unyielding strength and resolve to fight religious oppression. (1) The Maccabees used this acronym as a battle cry or slogan during their revolt.

Macabee and Exodus 15:11

In Jewish tradition, the word “Maccabee” has been attributed to the words preserved in Exodus 15:11, “Mi Chamocha Ba’Elim Adonai” which means: “Who is like Adonai from all the gods.” As the Israelites fled Pharoah and his army they walked across the Sea of Reeds on dry ground. The waters could have easily drowned everyone. The people were frozen still on the banks of the sea. (2)

Jewish tradition teaches the waters did not part until Nashon, one of the tribal leaders of the tribe of Judah and brother-in-law of Aaron, the first High Priest, took the first steps into the water. At that moment the waters split! (3)

"Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendor, doing wonders?" In Hebrew, this verse reads, "מִי כָמֹכָה בָּאֵלִם יְהוָה" (Mi Kamocha Ba'elim Adonai). The initial letters of these words form an acrostic that spells out "Maccabee." This subtle wordplay underscores the divine favor of the Israelites.

Macabee the Numerical Value

Rabbi Raymond Apple offers a numerical insight: “Maccabee the letters of which have the numerical value of 72 (מ=40, כ=20, ב=2, י=10), alluding to the 72-letter Divine Name of the Holy One of Blessing which all of humankind seek to understand and honor… this same Name which was used by Moses to help split the waters… this Name which speaks to the miraculous healing power of Unity.” (4)

Conclusion

"Maccabee" is more than a name; it captures the essence of the Maccabean Revolt - a blend of guerrilla warfare and profound spiritual faith. Maccabee serves as a reminder of the enduring strength and resilience of the Jewish people, grounded in both historical achievements and divine assistance.

By understanding the etymology and the layered meanings behind "Maccabee," we gain deeper insights into the timeless values of courage, faith, and perseverance that continue to inspire the Jewish people today.
